Akemi M. Almeida
Akemi Almeida is a student at DePaul University majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Hospitality.
She is a highly active member of DePaul’s on-campus organization Students For Sensible Drug Policy as vice president and treasurer. Previously while attending Elgin Community College where she earned her Associates of Arts degree, Akemi served as Fellowship Officer for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Her experiences with these roles allowed her to discover her passion to want to be a leading force in rewriting drug policy, as well as wanting to serve as an excellent host to others and offering them an unforgettable experience.
Her past work experience speaks for her ability to overcome cultural boundaries and be able to keep organized and operate. This includes being a Hostess for a family-owned Chinese restaurant, greeting guests and making them feel welcome as well as taking care of their transactions. She also works as a Sales Associate for her father’s alteration business working on advertisement and accomplishing regular office duties. More recently, she has obtained an internship with Alternative Vibes working in the PR/Community Outreach position.
Before fulfilling her dream in joining the cannabis industry to either operate a dispensary, cultivation center, or bed and breakfast, she wants to pay her dues first by working towards fair nationwide marijuana legislation. Her way of doing this is through educating others to help normalize cannabis in our society.
For now, Akemi takes pride in being a part of the non-profit organizations Chicago Psychedelic Club and Illinois Women in Cannabis. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, taking pictures of her chameleon, exploring new forest preserves, going to concerts, and simply spending quality time with her close friends.
